Issue No. 19 - June / July 2010

Letter from the Managing Director

Dear Members and Friends, We approach the end of the first half of 2010 with more good news as recently published statistics reveal a considerable rise in the both tourist numbers and receipts.

An example of this growth can easily be seen in Petra, which was visited by more than 200,000 people in the first quarter.

By the end of May, this number has doubled to 413,000 visitors, representing a quantum leap from the 288,000 people who visited the World Wonder in the same period of 2009.

Interest in Jordan has not been limited to it being a tourist destination, but also as an investment location for tourism projects.

A number of tourist developments have been recently announced including Aqaba’s Marsa Zayed. This $10 billion UAE investment is set to become one of Jordan's touristic landmarks and a welcoming gateway to Aqaba.

As one of the biggest developments in the region, this huge development includes a 2 Kilometer long waterfront with highrise towers, retail, recreational,
entertainment, business and financial districts and several branded hotels.

It also includes a state-of-the-art cruise ship terminal, and several marinas that would transform Aqaba into a premier yachting destination.

In ending my previous letter, I noted that “armed with optimism and very promising numbers, we are looking forward to a very successful year”.

This has, so far, been very true.

I believe a word of “thank you” is due right here to all our MBRs for a job well done despite the financial restrictions we have been forced to work under.

It is with their help and dedication that we managed to keep the momentum of interest in Jordan moving and growing.

Today, we remain armed with optimism and with very promising numbers, and we remain excited about yet another successful year.

Welcome to this new edition of JTBwire.

Nayef Al-Fayez
Managing Director
